Jake and Blue’s Raw Dog Food supports a Prey Model Raw diet being the only biologically appropriate diet for your carnivore. There are many benefits of a raw diet for dogs as the more natural and biologically appropriate diet for not just your dogs, but also your cats. Dogs are carnivores - they have evolved and thrived on raw food for a millennium, it is what their digestive systems are designed for. Raw dog food feeding is commonly mistaken for a new way to feed your dogs however raw feeding existed long before the invention of kibble which was invented in the 1800s as an imperishable food during lengthy sea journeys. Dogs have evolved for a millennium on a raw diet. Many argue that the domestication of the wolf, which in turn led to all the different breeds we have today, has caused dogs to be far removed from their raw meat eating ancestors. While looking at a dog externally there are many different shapes and sizes, but internally all dogs have the same anatomy. Starting with your dogs skull shape and dentition through to their shorter foregut and hindgut, a dog's internal anatomy is consistent with carnivorous animals. All raw diets are not created equal, it is important to start with quality ingredients for your pet's raw food to ensure your pet receives the full benefits of a raw diet for dogs. Most importantly, it is not too much to ask, to know every single ingredient that is in your pet's food!

All of our products are made in small 250Lb batches to ensure quality control. We start by weighing all of our different sources to guarantee a perfectly measured 80/10/10 diet every time. Once our products are weighed, they are sent through our grinder, mixed, pattied and then packaged before heading out to delivery.

Our food is sourced from human-grade meats from small farms local to us here in the Texas. The animals are grass-fed and pastured-raised with the exception of winter months when some supplemental feeding may be required. Our meat is antibiotic-free, steroid-free and hormone-free. Our meat contains no artificial ingredients, no preservatives, no fillers, no supplements, no by-products and no added sodium. It is 100% natural, pure raw meat.

-
No, we do not HPP. Our food is not cooked or pasteurized.
-
Pucks are pressed at 6-7 ounces as they come through our puck machine. Please keep in mind that as the pucks thaw during transit or are thawed at home and then weighed this will affect the weight as raw foods tend to be 60% or more moisture. Our products are binded in the mixer with the blood of the animal we sourced, any loss of moisture due to thawing will reduce overall weight slightly. Example: When thawing hamburger from the freezer and thawed in the fridge tends to leak, this is actually myoglobin and mostly water that is released. This is the same with your raw dog food.

For an overall healthy pet, no. A balanced 80/10/10, nutrient rich diet, made with quality ingredients has everything your dog requires. Pet's with certain diseases or health concerns may require additional supplements. We believe in Omega 3 fatty acids, glucosamine and probiotics on an as needed basis.

Jake and Blue’s Raw Dog Food is a Prey Model Raw diet and does not believe in feeding fruits, vegetables or grains. Your dogs pancreas only produces a small amount of amylase. Feeding fruit and vegetables will put a strain on the pancreas as it attempts to break these things down as they are not designed to digest these. Not only that but carbs, and especially fruit can cause yeast issues due to the sugar. Allergies can be blamed on the inclusion of veg in the diet as well. Another important consideration is Omega 3. Omega 3 is very important for healthy brain function, eyesight, skin and coat condition etc. Balancing Omega 3 and Omega 6 is important as Omega 6 is inflammatory and 3 is anti-inflammatory. Dogs require Omega 3s EPA and DHA whereas plants contain ALA. When a herbivore eats plants it can convert ALA to EPA and DHA and therefore when your carnivore eats the herbivore it gets the correct fatty acids it needs. Your dog cannot convert ALA to EPA and DHA.

Live animals are obtained from selected producers for Jake and Blue’s Raw Dog Food products. This is the first step towards providing quality food for your dog. Animals are humanely slaughtered at regulated abattoirs, prepared and processed in the same manner as human-grade meat products. Jake and Blue’s Raw Dog Food products are processed at a human-quality facility that follows human food handling protocols. Every step of processing through to final packaging is carried out in a controlled environment to maintain food integrity and eliminate bacterial contagion. Our whole animal blends are deep frozen for a minimum of 7 days to eliminate harmful bacteria from the food. We use this process on all our raw products, regardless of the protein. We then send all batches to be tested for pathogenic bacteria – nothing leaves our facility without negative test results in hand. We are highly committed to creating the most nutritious, safe, and delicious product on the market.
-
We never use any artificial preservatives in our food. The only preservative we use is the freezer.

While some companies suggest a slow transition, we recommend you approach this diet change by eliminating the previous diet completely and begin feeding Jake and Blue’s Raw Dog Food for the first meal of the day. This allows for a 12 hour fast prior to making the switch and begins the detoxification process to provide your pet with optimal health and wellness. This transition is simple and appropriate for most young and/or healthy dogs that have a history of easily accepting diet changes. Note: Kibble can ferment in the the stomach lining for up to three weeks. When transitioning, your pup may temporarily have loose stools or digestive upset. Also, since frozen raw is so different from kibble, the texture and temperature change may take a little getting used to. This is all normal and expected. Please refer to our Raw Feeding Guide HERE.
-
Each dog is different and your dog will experiences some changes as they begin their new raw diet. Your dog will likely experience loose stools as they begin their transition. It is important to remember that loose stools is not diarrhea. Your dogs new raw diet is much more nutrient rich and your dog may experience detoxification as the body cleanses itself of toxins.
-
When switching a pet over from kibble or canned food to Jake and Blue’s Raw Dog Food, the dog's body may begin the process of expelling toxins and impurities as it adjusts to the consumption of proper nutrients. This process is called detoxification or simply "detox". Depending on factors such as age, how long they have been fed commercial pet food, or immune system health, detox may last a couple of days, one week, one month, several months, or in some cases, not even at all. The most common symptoms of detox include vomiting, diarrhea, bad breath, and itchy skin. Remember to be persistent and know you are going through the transition, which will be the hardest part. Make sure you supply fresh water at all times and, of course, lots of love. For diarrhea and loose stools, you can add some plain organic canned pumpkin, which will help to firm stools. (A half a teaspoon for dogs weighing up to 30 lb, one teaspoon for dogs weighing 30-60 lb, and one tablespoon for larger dogs.)
-
Each dog is different and has their own preferences. Either is fine and your dog will let you know what they prefer!
-
Yes. While we always recommend feeding 100% raw to see the full benefits of a raw diet, we understand that this isn't for everyone, so we of course support the idea that some fresh raw is better than none.
-
Please use our Feeding Guide HERE determine how much food your dog should eat per day.
-
If feeding your pet twice daily, simply divide the total daily feeding portion in half and feed once in the morning and once in the evening! See our Feeding Guide HERE for estimates on how much to feed your pet. Factors such as level of activity, age, health, metabolism, and breed play a part in the necessary feeding quantities of all animals. Please be sure to talk to your vet for more specific recommendations.
-
Always thaw the food by tempering in the refrigerator. Thawed food can be stored up to four days. Never microwave your raw food. Our raw dog food should never be re-frozen once thawed.
-
Our frozen pucks, chubs or tubes should be gently defrosted overnight in a covered container in the refrigerator. Please note that our products should never be cooked, heated, or microwaved. If you need to defrost product quickly, you can place the food in a Ziplock bag or glass bowl and submerse the product in warm (never hot) water for a few minutes. Once served, the food can sit out for up to 30 mins – anything left after that should be discarded.
-
Handle our frozen raw in the same manner that you’d handle raw meat; wash hands, working surfaces, utensils, bowls and any other items that come in contact with frozen raw with hot, soapy water. Feeding tip: A tried-and-true approach is prepping your pet’s next meal and putting it in the fridge while you are feeding them! Then, you’ll always have their next meal thawed and ready to go. If your pet doesn’t consume all the frozen raw food presented within 30 minutes, discard any leftovers.
-
Jake and Blue’s Raw Goat Milk should be stored in the freezer until ready to use, and can be thawed in the refrigerator. Once thawed, it will stay fresh for 10 days under refrigeration. It can also be portioned and refrozen, if you like. We recommend thawing completely in the fridge, shaking well, and pouring into an ice cube tray to refreeze in smaller, ready-to-thaw portions.
-
Our food will stay good in your refrigerator for up to 4 days. Our food will stay good in your freezer sealed in its original packaging for up to 6 months.
-
Raw diets are much higher in moisture, approx. 60% moisture, typical of raw food. This means that your dog is getting more moisture from their diet, which is not requiring them to drink as much. The moisture is completely removed from kibble, which also has added sodium, causing your dog to be thirsty more often.
-
The proof is in the poo! Your dogs stools are smaller (and less stinky) and because the raw diet that they are now transitioned to is being digested and fully utilized by their body. Fillers in your dogs previous diet, which are not utilized are passed through digestion and back out of the body which is why the stools are much larger.
